There has been a strong hope & desire to have Starfield launch this yr. How major the impacts due to COVID have been on the title is anyone's guess, but 2021 was the intended goal for release as of a few months ago.

I'm not an insider because I have no info from after mid 2019, nor do I want to be one. However, I do have first hand knowledge (at least partially) about where the game was development wise in early to mid 2019.

Then tell us more if you actually worked there. Does the game have pilotable ships?
And if you really worked at Bethesda, you should know how little time they need to finish a game once they start actively working on it. We know Fallout 4 was in active full development only for 2 years (after Skyrim's DLCs were done). Even if what you say is true and the game "was crashing" in 2018, 3 years of active development is more than Bethesda had with Fallout 4, and Bethesda had much less people working on Fallout 4.

I'm still confused why you would buy the company and not make the games at least a lengthy timed-exclusive, if not fully exclusive. I get they want to be a software company in this space eventually but while they're still selling boxes... this sells boxes!

I could see general information about the deal and involved games in march, a deep dive als Fallout 4 around E3 and then a release late 2021/ mid 2022 for Starfield tbh

yeah but this has been happening for generations / years... with mostly xbox on short end of the stick and now they got pissed and said FU with corporate level $$$ to back it up.

peeps gotta remember this is a business end of the day and for MS GP subs are the future. You don't put ur games on other platforms when u want GP to grow to 50-100m.

Lol, you're characterizing MS as some angry fanboy getting revenge, I doubt that's how it went down. Like you said, it's a business at the end of the day. Xbox is simply investing in content to bolster its Gamepass numbers. It's a smart move for them, but I don't fault PS5 owners for being annoyed about it. Just like I don't fault Xbox gamers for being annoyed at having to wait to play Final Fantasy 16.

I look forward to getting some final resolution on this. Hopefully we actually get it.

Long Island
Fanboys were initially mad when Quantum Break was announced for PC. But they eventually came to terms with it.

It will be the same, when people realize that not all Bethesda games will be exclusive to Xbox, something they are clearly hoping for, making banners and warring on twitter.

Fanboys are really hoping that Phil Spencer steps on the stage immediately after the completion of the acquisition saying: "When everyone plays, we all win unless you are a PlayStation gamer. That's why we cancelled the PlayStation version of Starfield and TES6. X Gon' Give It to Ya!!!"
I doubt he will say anything like that he just won't mention them at all.

when you're offering the game on 3 services it's no longer giving people next to no option but simply an Xbox console.

I hope it doesn't take too long to get their back catalogue on game pass. Resolution and framerate bumps would be a nice bonus.

I mean, it's to sell gamepass not hardware. I'm sure MS would be fine selling you an Xbox Studios games on psn if Sony allowed it.
Why would Sony deny Xbox publishing games for Playstation? In fact they don't, because Minecraft is on PS. Another fact is that with the exception of Minecraft no XGS game published by Microsoft is on PS.

Microsoft has similar reasons to keep those games Xbox exclusive as Sony/Nintendo have keeping their games exclusive. Gamepass is another one or is it possible to subscribe to GP on PS?

More players gaming on PC/Xbox -> more potential Gamepass subscribers. Simple as that. Strengthening the competition means lowering the amount of people potentially having plattforms to subscribe to Gamepass.

I'm not sure we will get all the details people expect. Other companies are not doing this so I'm unsure why is expected of them.

All they need to confirm is that games will be on Gamepass going forwards, that's it.

So what are the odds MS is cool with FF7R and FF16 being paid exclusives and letting Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 on PS5?

Right. I'm not saying it'll 100% for certain happen; but, as of late last year, I was hearing the goal was to launch this year. But it is a Bethesda game and delays or issues may arise to prevent the release from coming.

My guess is they push it back to early '22 due to COVID but start the marketing blitz this year.

Finally! I would really love to see where Bethesda is heading with its new games.
Also, TES Skyrim was 10 years ago so let's hope to see the new Tes somehow

I wouldn't be surprised if Starfield releases in 2021 unless obviously COVID, or maybe Microsoft gives an influx of additional resources to make it even better for a 2022 release.

I still believe it's naive to think that Microsoft will cancel the (nearly completed?) PS4/PS5 versions of the game that's supposed to come out this year, just to flex.

That's 10+ million copies sold to offset some of the cost of the acuqistion. Xbox will still have the advantage to have the game "free" on Game Pass.

Whenever it releases I hope that it is as polished as it can be. FO76 has made big strides since it's release and curated a decent base, but I don't think they want to have a repeat of that.

As I understand most of the optimization work happens in the last months and even if Starfield releases this year, than there are several months between today and the release.

PS: you really think Starfield will sell 10+ million on PS4/5? Btw we don't even know if there is a last gen version.

All I know is from crash logs, so playable yes, but the types of crashes it was spitting out (in relation to creation engine issues) were not from a game that was anywhere near completion. No real QA testing was being pursued at the time on the project, that I know for a fact. If QA hadn't even started, and the nature of bethesda games, I highly doubt it will release in 2021.
So your knowledge comes from the crash logs 2.5 years old. Crash logs that all games in development have, but you concluded that the game wasn't playable and can't possibly be released in 2021 because it was crashing a lot 2.5 years ago. But other than that, you can't tell us anything, even what the game is about? How is it possible to work at a dev studio and know nothing about the game other than the crash logs? I'm not being sarcastic. I'm genuinely confused by this. Even if you were a janitor, you would have known something. Devs love talking.

And QA not being started in early 2019 would be normal for games releasing in late 2021.

That's not super reasonable either, but that's not really the same thing considering GOW has been a lifelong PS franchise and we're talking about a platform agnostic developer remaining platform agnostic here.
But they're not anymore, they're owned by Microsoft...and except for a few ongoing existing games it seems weird how people would expect other games to come to Playstation.
Why is Spiderman not on Xbox?

About the event, we could have a "welcome" video for all employees and a derivative used as a PR advertising too, because none of these studios have been consulted for an acquisition or to produce software exclusively, it was only on hands of owners.

To all people who've answered my post about how it would impact Zenimax : my question was too vague but I didn't mentioned the PS - "half of the market" for me includes Nintendo and the potential of all futur projects, and ratios can vary between platforms from games to games and between full apps and DLCs revenues. I packed grossly what it can represent financially among many third-party publishers.

I have no doubt it makes sense for Microsoft, but consequences for the branch acquired are less evident, to being deprived of the other two consoles and to produce under a subscription economy. Because for MS it's like buying GitHub, Minecraft or Linkedin : an essential part of the value is in the brand, and mostly in customers of these services, not in the service itself technologically.
