Initially, the console was going to be announced in June but the latest reports say August, but I can't independently verify that yet. Here's a fun fact though, the original launch plans for Lockhart was that it was going to be released in Mid-October. That may not sound all that surprising, but Anaconda, the series X, was going to release in late August; clearly plans have been adjusted since the conception of the hardware.

No surprise that those dates have slipped and the announcement timeline for Lockhart has been far more fluid than we have seen in previous years. That's why it's a bit hard to lock down the exact date but the announcement should be coming sooner, rather than later.

Here's the latest on what is and isn't happening with Lockhart.

Yeah it was supposed to be at one point very late summer/very early fall.

Wasn't there also a previous rumor about a September release?

would it have launched with halo?

if not then it seems a bit weird launching your next-gen console without its big flagship title

Wowzers that's pretty crazy, wonder how long ago those plans changed. Also I wonder if we'll see the two systems still launching at different times.

Wait... Series X was announced for Holiday 2020 back in December last year, before COVID really got going.

August is not Holiday.

Edit: they actually announced Holiday 2020 at E3 in June 2019, so this makes even less sense.

August would have been WILD but I doubt that Infinity would have been a launch title.

From the article. Sounds like there was initial concern about Lockhart from developers which would align with what Jason Schreier and Digital Foundry alluded to previously. Doesn't appear to be a concern now:

"One of the misconceptions about Lockhart is that it is going to hold back next-generation games. It's a valid concern and the idea sprung up about a year ago when details were murky about the path ahead for the next generation consoles. Specifically, developers were not fully versed in how development (or profiling as it is now called) was going to actually work on the hardware which resulted in myself, and others, hearing mixed messaging from those briefed early on the plans.

As we have learned more during the past year, those concerns have faded as Microsoft has built a strategy of using the same base components across both devices (like Raytracing support and CPU specs) that should make it easier for developers to target the same visual fidelity for both consoles but at different resolutions. Meaning, the series X will be optimized for 4k gaming while the series S is optimized at 4TF for 1080P displays."

It's always made sense to release consoles well ahead of the holiday rush so there's time to replenish inventory for holiday. I imagine it's been planned or hoped for before with other consoles but they weren't able to for whatever reason.

Didn't they announce Holiday 2020 before Covid-19 at the Game Awards? I don't believe this at all.

To clarify I mean Covid as a global pandemic.

It always did seem production of Xbox seemed further forward than PlayStation on a production line - would be a pretty aggresive move having that much of a head start makes me kind of hope for September with pre orders opening in July ? Although think october is the earliest we will get

Hmm, hard to imagine there would have been anything significant third-party wise launching then. Launching in November means that you can at least expect cross-gen ports of the big third party IPs (CoD, AC, etc). Other than Madden what would have even been available for an August launch?

Last Year's E3 Project Scarlett trailer had a "holiday 2020" at the end. So maybe the decision of pushing the release was made before corona?

So Halo should be done then?! Would've been pretty huge. And it makes sense given they revealed it in Dec. I assume this also means covid has given these dev teams extra time to polish thier games.

That is quite earlier than I expected. I wonder how far back they have pushed it now. An "early" release would certainly a mic drop moment.

The first COVID cases weren't reported until over 2 weeks after the Series X was announced for Holiday...

It could have easily been set to launch earlier but the COVID narrative is nonsense.
