Lucifer shall rise again… one last time. TVLine has learned exclusively that the Fox-turned-Netflix drama has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The show’s fourth season, which was released on May 8, earned an average grade of “A” from TVLine readers.
Season 5’s episode count is TBA.
“We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms,” reads a statement from co-showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich. “Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!”
When TVLine asked the series bosses last month about the renewal timeline, they indeed hoped to get the good word by early June. As Henderson noted, “The fan support is super-important, and in particular [the first] month is going to be crucial towards whether or not we get a Season 5, because they [at Netflix] are paying attention. So far, the fan support has been amazing — everything you could ask for.”
“I mean, holy crap. It’s just been great,” added Modrovich. “I don’t know if I could ever handle it when bad reviews came or something, because I feel so spoiled and grateful right now.”
After airing for three seasons on Fox, Lucifer was “rescued” by Netflix just weeks after its cancellation. The 10-episode Season 4 found the titular devil dealing with both a pesky priest and the return of his very first girlfriend, Eve (as in “Adam and”). The finale, without spoiling anything for you inexcusably tardy bingers out there, was both a treat and a taunt for the “DeckerStar” faithful, raising big questions about how the series will move forward from where it left off.
The showrunners told TVLine they have known Season 5’s opening sequence “literally since we started Season 4,” with Moldrovich adding: “We also have one other, really fun toy to play with, that we know is going to be a big guiding factor in Season 5, so we’re excited about that, too.”
Watch series lead Tom Ellis’ reaction to the renewal news:
thanks to the lucifans, #lucifer's story will come to an end the way it should: the fifth and final season is coming to @netflix. pic.twitter.com/EvknS5AVHK

Are you glad to see the Devil get his Season 5 due?
FINAL SEASON?! UGH! (*dies*)
I will cancel my Netflix subscription if they cancel Lucifer after season 5!
Well I guess you’re canceling
The show is getting to go out on its own terms, and will have an ending. You should be thanking Netflix for rescuing the show in the first place.
Hell yes. Five seasons of a show I enjoy = Thanks for saving it Netflix. I’d like more but great Mephistopheles if you want Netflix to save your show you don’t start cursing them if they don’t save it forever.
You’re aware what a final season is, right?
I’m with you on that .I’ll have to cancel as well..hulu here I come
Well….
There is still some other possibilities.
Lucifer and his gang can start another series with Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Crowdfunder… Amazon, etc.
Bible is full of scenarios for next million episodes.
Will be shame, if they stay in shadow, and forgoten.
.
I would like see, how Luci will met with his step brother Jesus.
I agree. I hate Hulu but I’m using it instead of Netflix if the fifth seson is canceled. And some of you might not agree, but I wish they were going to make more seasons for the show, not just four and a possibility of a fifth.
You know they have other shows right Carrie?
I would much rather Lucifer go out on top and well written than languish for 14 seasons like Supernatural. And yes, I used to be a Supernatural fan.
It better have more than 10 episodes that’s all I want a full season 20 episodes at least
I’m sure they’ll be fine wit that- that’s the whole beauty of their service .
I was late Lucifer but having binge watched the first three seasons on Amazon prime (now rewatching again) prior to Netflix series 4 I thought 4 lost a lot of what made 1-3 so good. It got darker and more adult in tone (Dan + Ella why really what was the point?) and lost a lot of the humour that made first 3 such a delight. Only ten episodes made it all seem rushed. Netflix gets all the headlines and publicity for rescuing a very popular show but then kind of ruins it. It seems to me it was probably only dropped by Amazon prime to make way for the bigger named cast and creators but inferior Good Omens which also features angels, demons and biblical mythology show. Huge mistake.
I think we’ll agree to disagree there. Season 4 was so much fun I binged it in 3 days! So glad it’s getting another season, just wish it wasn’t the final one…
It wasn’t dropped by Amazon. Netflix took it over when the USA TV company cancelled it. Also luicfer is based off sandman comics written by Neil Gaiman who also wrote and produced American God’s and Good Omens.
Actually, it was Fox that cancelled Lucifer. Suits is the show USA is ending.
Hard disagree! This season was delightfully fun and having 10 episodes was fantastic for the pacing – one of my problems with the earlier seasons was how long they dragged out storylines and the incessant amount of filler episodes.
Yes, Hannah, I agree that the longer season was HELL to sit thru! Maybe they were waiting for the “Freeze” to happen? LOL
I thought it was a big plus, and the show was even better. Sorry, don;t agree at all with that.
I haven’t finished it yet (but have read the spoilers) and I have to say that “Della” is just…no, not JUST a stretch! A SUPER stretch!
Its never a good thing for a series to be continued past its time.
Remember Castle? Or Supernatural? Or Archer?
All good stories must come to an end.
I didn’t watch much Castle and haven’t seen the others. Based on Matdaemon’s comment, though; yes, if they keep it up with the same tone as this season, it might be better to let it die peacefully.
Glad we get another season but I really thought this would get a few more season on Netflix.
Why? Netflix is canceling shows left and right after a few seasons. It’s going to be the exception not the rule for them to have shows that last beyond 3 seasons. And with 3 seasons on Fox and 2 on Netflix, they have the library they need. No need to spend more money.
Season four was a huge hit for Netflix.
The top show last month as I understand.
Yes the only shows that will run longer than 3-4 seasons will be those of the big ones like 13RW, Stranger Things, etc
Or quite simply: Netflix will only keep the show it actually owns for more seasons. All shows that are licensed should have a countdown deathwatch attached. (Lucifer is owned by AT&T, and they might want it back on their streaming service eventually, like Friends for example.)
That’s @Netflix Mantra – 3 it & quit it!
Unless it is awards bait.
me too. and i feel kinda ripped off, only having 10 episodes in S4, instead of the 22 we used to get
First season had 13, second season had 16, third season had 24.
So how are we used to 22?
Why would you feel ripped off? Netflix NEVER gives their seasons a lot of episodes. If they do, they split it up into Part 1 and Part 2. Most Netflix shows get 10 episodes — 13 episodes if they are lucky. Besides, you should just be grateful that Netflix even picked the show up in the first place. Fox canceled it and Netflix is giving you 2 more seasons. 2 more seasons that you WOULDN’T have had had Netflix not renewed it. You aren’t getting ripped off. You are just ungrateful.
Exactly. And let’s be honest, 10-13 episodes per season is so vastly superior to longer time frames.
I’m thinking maybe the reason we got more episodes on some instead of all is because they needed certain episode lengths depending on what ever the main theme for the story is. I wasn’t happy S4 wasn’t as long but how much could they really do with the Eve story. ?
I love this show my daughter has been watching since the first episode. I regret to say I refused to watch the show with her based on the name of the show. But I have differently had a change of heart and not only did I binge watched all 4 seasons on Netflix but I watched it with my 75 year young mom and we are hooked everyday waiting for the news of season 5. We are lucerhooked and differently lucerfans. Hey Netflix you have a goldmine on your hands keep it going past 5. We lucerbeg you……
It’s a shame that they’re ending it with 5, but I’m glad they’ll be able to map out a proper finale.
I’ll take one more season, better than none!! Absolutely love this show!
I binged on the sexy Lucifer season 4. The finale episode left me craving more. So happy to see that there will be a season 5.
Knew it wouldn’t last.
Repackage and off to syndication.
The show is on Netflix. No way they let them syndicate.
They do for Bojack Horseman syndication to Comedy Central.
As long as the price is right..why not?
I wasn’t aware. I rescind the “no way.” That said, isn’t Netflix (one of) the production company for Bojack Horseman? If so, Netflix would gain from syndication the same way any other production company would. Lucifer is produced by Warner Bros TV; I don’t think Netflix has any stake in the production. So can Warner Bros make enough off syndication to offset whatever they would have to pay Netflix for Netflix to forfeit its (I imagine) exclusive rights to the show? I suppose we’ll see.
I read that Warner Bros. is planning their own streaming company by the end of 2019, well it was second hand info. So maybe fans will get lucky and Lucifer will make a come back again? I’d love it if that happened. But only if its with the original cast. Showrunners aren’t saying, so could just be a fan’s ‘Desire’ if you will. I really thought there would be just a few more seasons since its doing so well. I’m grateful to get season 5, but heart broken the series is ending with S5 at the same time.
Hulu was licensed to show Lucifer until Netflix was then licensed to carry it. Lucifer belongs to Warner Bros. so if they license someone else, they series will be moved again if it makes a come back.
well then guess we will CANCEL NETFLIX AFTER SEASON 5
Wow, the entitlement some people feel over a TV show is amazing. Netflix RESCUED THE SHOW from cancellation (after a pretty big cliffhanger to boot), and they’re giving the showrunners the opportunity to end the show on their own terms. But instead of being grateful, you’re going to cancel the service that’s allowing the show to have a proper ending. Cancel if you want, of course, but please understand how ridiculous this is.
Yeah!! I hate when Netflix saves a canceled show I like and then, with no obligation to do this, decide to give it a proper ending that will bring closure to the series. I hate Netflix!!!
Season 4 was a gift TBH. Grateful to Netflix for taking it on. Not mad about it ending with Season 5, because really, with everything getting rebooted 10 minutes after it ends, I have a feeling it won’t be the last we see of Lucifer!
I’m sad that it’s the last season, but they’ll get to go out on their own terms, and that’s what matters.
Thank you, Netflix!
Agree.
This. Well said.
Agree.
One more season of Lucifer, one more season of Netflix.
I only joined Netflix because they picked up Lucifer.
Me too, but I’m finding LOTS on there to keep me subscribed.
And that right there is exactly why they do it.
me too and I have friends who joined because of Lucifer so NETFLIX is shooting itself in the butt because after they cancel the show we will unsub from Netflix not enough to keep us there SORRY NETFLIX AFTER YOU CANCEL LUCIFER WE WILL PART COMPANY
Agreed!!! That’s the only reason I got Netflix so after season 5 good bye Netflix!!!!!
I am so very very happy and excited that Lucifer will be back for a season 5. I am also sad that it will be the last but happy we get to see how it will truly end.
Hope they change their minds about ending after Season 5 and continue with the show. It’s a Great show and I love ❤️ Lucifer. It’s my favorite show on tv. Seriously, I hope it continues on to Season 6.
I am sad. This shows deserves to last at least 10 seasons
While I’m happy that we got season 4,the best one yet,and now we’ll have a 5th season, I can’t help but feeling really sad….I was hoping for at least 2 more seasons!
Well, I’m thrilled it’s getting S5, but honestly, is the TV industry adverse to making money these days? I don’t understand why no one wants to keep a show going for any extensive length of time when the ratings are good and the fan base is crazy strong. I really miss the old days when your favourite show could do 8-10 seasons.
Those days are over.
I’d be impressed if a freshman series makes it through s01.
If the ratings/profits actually justify running a show that long, they do (so long as the cast/crew want to do that show that long). Getting a hit show is hard enough these days with so many different shows and viewing options vying for people’s attention; if somebody thinks they have a hit show they aren’t letting go of it. Lucifer has a passionate fanbase, but that fanbase clearly isn’t translating into dollars.
I’m happy it gets another season, I’m disappointed that this will be the last.
I was truly hoping for a few more seasons, but I am GRATEFUL for another season! I really enjoy this show with the humor and dialog. The actors are fantastic. I Look forward to another binge watch!!
Oh, JOY! I’m new to “Lucifer,” having “discovered” it only a couple of weeks ago, and it was love at first viewing! I got my partner addicted to it, too. I haven’t binge-watched, but I watch one episode per day, while on the treadmill, and it makes my hour feel like mere minutes. I am so totally hooked on this series that I will probably need therapy at the end of next season, but “Lucifer” is, hands down, my all-time favorite show!!!!
Very happy that they get to finish the story they want to, the way they feel is best. A little sad because it will be over.
Thank you @Netflix I never doubted it wouldn’t get another season but I like MANY OTHER #lucifans feel this series could go one for MANY more seasons 😢 I guess we’ll have to be happy w/ #Luciferseason5 😈🖤 and raise holy hell 🔥 afterwards in hopes of changing your mind 😉
So good news and bad news. I really thought Netflix would give it more than two seasons.
Yay Season 5!!!! Season 4 was phenomenal! Sad this will be the last season ☹️
I thought this would last at least two more seasons.
At least they can properly write up to a nice ending.
Love this show. I hope for a lot of episodes season 5
I’d like to have more seasons but I’d rather that they tell the story they want to tell without dragging it out if it isn’t necessary. And, honestly, the actors may want to move on to something else as well.
That’s the spirit! 👍
Very happy we all get a final season and a wrap up, but disappointed when Luci is getting tax incentive money from the State of Califronia so the cost is substantially lower…..
