Batman: The Telltale Series coming to retail the month after season premiere

Batman: The Telltale Series, the upcoming adventure game starring the Dark Knight, will be available in a physical disc version at retail starting Sept. 13, distributor Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced today.

The retail release will be known as the "Season Pass Disc," and will include only the first of five episodes in the inaugural season of Batman: The Telltale Series. Buyers of the physical version will be able to download the other four episodes as they’re released digitally. The Season Pass Disc will cost $29.99, and following its North American release, it will launch Sept. 16 in Europe.

It’s an unusual step for developer Telltale, which usually brings its adventure games to retail, but only after releasing an entire episodic season.  (Minecraft: Story Mode was released in this new "Season Pass Disc" format.) Batman: The Telltale Series will debut as a downloadable game sometime in August — Telltale has yet to confirm a specific date — on Android, iOS, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The pricing will be in line with Telltale’s other five-episode seasons: The first chapter will cost $4.99, and the season pass will cost $24.99.

Warner Bros. also said today that as part of its retail distribution agreement with Telltale, the upcoming third season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead will also be available in a physical disc version. Season 3 of The Walking Dead — which will feature returning hero Clementine as a teenager, along with series newcomer Javier — is set to premiere this fall; Warner Bros. did not specify when the retail release will launch.

Update: A Telltale representative reached out to Polygon to note that Batman: The Telltale Series won't be the studio's first game to be released at retail in the "Season Pass Disc" format. We've edited the article to reflect this.
