No Man's Sky trailer takes you through the universe

Fly fast and free

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 16 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

Exploration is perhaps the foundation of No Man's Sky, and the first in a new series of trailers explaining what you do in the game focuses on that element of developer Hello Games’ universe simulator.

Every No Man’s Sky player will start out in their own infinitesimally small corner of the universe, and will make progress by visiting other planets in that solar system. The more they explore, the more resources they’ll find. The more resources and technologies they collect, the more upgrades they’ll be able to make to their ship and suit — and that, in turn, will eventually allow them to leave their home solar system.

Videos focusing on the other three core pillars of No Man’s Sky (combat, trading and survival) will be released in the next few weeks, according to Sony. No Man’s Sky is set for release in less than a month: Aug. 9 on PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. For more, check out our hands-on preview from this past spring.
