Rumor: Titanfall 2 adds grappling hooks, larger multiplayer maps

Titanfall 2 will give players a new way to traverse the game's environments and engage others in combat, thanks to the addition of a grappling hook, according to a post on the Titanfall subreddit. A user claiming to have knowledge of Respawn Entertainment's next game posted that gameplay detail alongside a piece of legitimate-looking artwork to back up their claim.

That grappling hook, the Reddit user said, is used for "getting into your Titan, aiding free-running, or tactical plays such as pulling enemies while they're midair." Titanfall 2 will also apparently feature larger multiplayer maps.

The piece of artwork posted by that Reddit user ("ilovegoogleglass") doesn't appear to feature a grappling hook (nor the sword teased in Titanfall 2's first trailer), though it does match a teaser image posted to the game's official website. What it does feature are some familiar elements: Titans, pilots and infantry doing battle in a futuristic sci-fi setting.

The poster on Reddit also claims that Titanfall 2 will be out this October. Publisher Electronic Arts already has another shooter on the books for that month: Battlefield 1. Both Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 will be during EA's fiscal third quarter, which runs Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2016, the company has said.

Another apparent leak for Titanfall 2 says that Respawn's sequel will be the featured game in this year's release of Mountain Dew's Game Fuel line of soft drinks. A Facebook fan page for Game Fuel indicates that Titanfall 2's promotional soda will come in two flavors: Mango Heat and Cherry Citrus. While Mountain Dew's line of game-associated beverages typically launch annually in October, the games they're promoting sometimes release the following month.

We've reached out to EA for comment on this week's Titanfall 2 rumors and will update with any new information we receive.

EA and Respawn officially announced Titanfall 2 in April. A full reveal of the game is happening June 12, at the publisher's EA Play event, which runs alongside E3 2016. EA says it will release Titanfall 2 sometime this fall.
